perched atop a bluff 100 feet above the shores of lake michigan, atwater park is one of shorewood’s most iconic civic spaces. serving as a passive park, community gathering spot, and direct connection to the lakefront, the park embodies both the village’s heritage and its recreational future. the village of shorewood partnered with snyder & associates to develop a master plan that addressed failing hardscape surfaces, deteriorating landscapes, and the long-term circulation challenges for both maintenance vehicles and pedestrians.

the plan was envisioned not only as a response to ongoing maintenance issues but also as a blueprint for celebrating the park’s historical character. by blending design sensitivity with practical infrastructure improvements, our team sought to ensure the park remains a vibrant community destination for generations to come.

balancing maintenance needs with civic character

the project aimed to accomplish three critical objectives. first, it was necessary to establish a safe and reliable maintenance path on the park’s upper level that could handle larger service vehicles. second, the design needed to reduce impervious surfaces and simplify the materials used throughout the site to promote sustainability and ease of upkeep. finally, the park improvements had to reflect its role as a civic landmark by reinforcing its historic character and supporting its identity as a community gathering place.

early collaboration with shorewood’s 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 works department ensured that staff input directly shaped design concepts. special attention was given to the steep grades and tight turn radii that complicate the movement of large fleet vehicles, balancing those functional requirements with the park’s broader community uses.

preserving views and overcoming site challenges

the site’s unique topography presented significant challenges. steep slopes and narrow paths complicated maintenance access, while the park’s cultural value demanded preservation of key visual connections to lake michigan and the historic shipwreck just offshore. at the same time, the project required careful coordination with improvements planned along an adjacent state route, ensuring the two efforts would align seamlessly without diminishing the park’s functionality or character.

drawing inspiration from the park’s history

to develop solutions rooted in both practicality and respect for heritage, snyder & associates turned to historic imagery and aerial photographs to study the park’s evolution over time. this research revealed circulation patterns and design elements that informed decisions about which pedestrian routes should be maintained, simplified, or reintroduced.

the resulting plan reduced the number of unnecessary sidewalk segments, streamlining movement through the park while lowering long-term maintenance needs. plaza spaces were incorporated to highlight existing 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 art and provide flexible gathering points. by reducing impervious surfaces, the design also enhanced bluff stability and minimized erosion risks, offering long-term environmental benefits that strengthen the site’s resilience.

engaging the community and securing support

世界杯足球比赛预选赛 engagement was a cornerstone of the 2022世界杯32强预选赛 process. the snyder & associates team collaborated with 世界杯足球比赛预选赛 works staff to lead community workshops, present design options, and gather valuable feedback from residents. these efforts ensured that the final plan reflected community priorities while also aligning with practical maintenance needs. to support long-term implementation, cost estimates were developed and shared with the parks committee, helping position the village to secure funding through its capital improvement plan.

a vision approved for the future

the master plan ultimately gained approval from both the parks committee and the village council and will be adopted into shorewood’s comprehensive parks and open space plan. among the key achievements were the creation of a maintenance path designed for large fleet vehicles, the preservation and enhancement of sweeping views over lake michigan, and the integration of sustainable design strategies that reduce impervious surfaces and protect the bluff.

by weaving together historical preservation, practical maintenance solutions, and sustainable design practices, snyder & associates created a plan that honors atwater park’s storied past while preparing it for a resilient future. with its approval, the village of shorewood now has a clear framework to continue investing in one of its most treasured community assets.

reliable access to safe drinking water is essential for any community, and the city of atchison is taking proactive steps to enhance its raw water supply system. as part of these efforts, snyder & associates provided critical engineering support for the city’s new radial collector wells, designed to meet the growing water demands of residents, industries, and rural water customers. this innovative system will help supply the city’s water treatment plant, which requires a peak flow capacity of approximately 9 million gallons daily (mgd).

project scope & site challenges

the city’s water treatment plant is situated approximately 8,300 feet from the existing raw water pumping station and more than 12,000 feet from the new radial collector wells. compounding this challenge, the plant is located approximately 200 feet higher in elevation than the well field. to efficiently integrate the new wells into the system, 4,000 feet of new raw water main is being constructed to connect with the existing raw water pipeline. the project design prioritizes maximizing the use of the existing infrastructure while maintaining the operation of the current raw water intake pump station.

addressing surge control & system integrity

given the significant water volume being supplied, high static head, and high pumping head, the project required extensive analysis to implement effective surge control measures. to compound the complexity, the existing raw water main presents some unknowns due to its original design and condition. currently, daily operating flow and pressure data provide the only confirmed information on its performance. to safeguard potentially fragile sections of the pipeline, the new system has been engineered to prevent surge pressures from exceeding those currently experienced in daily operations.

high-capacity pump stations & operational flexibility

each radial well functions as a high-capacity pump station, equipped with three vertical turbine pumps powered by 500-horsepower electric motors. these pumps are controlled by variable frequency drives (vfds), allowing smooth startup and shutdown along with precise adjustments to match water demand. the system offers significant operational flexibility as pumps can function independently, in coordination with other pumps at the same well, in tandem with the second well, or in conjunction with the existing raw water pump station.

advanced control & reliability features

to further enhance reliability, specialized pump check valves and mechanical surge relief equipment have been incorporated into the system to prevent damage during unexpected shutdowns, such as power failures. additionally, both wells are fully integrated into the city’s scada system, enabling centralized control from the treatment plant. given the remote location of the wells and operational complexity, the control systems have been designed for maximum reliability, intuitive operation, and resilience against disruptions.

emergency preparedness & flooding considerations

an added challenge for the project is the potential for seasonal flooding, which could occasionally require boat access to the well sites. to mitigate operational risks, each well site is equipped with an emergency power system featuring large natural gas-fired emergency generators with automatic operation, ensuring uninterrupted service even in the event of power outages.

sustainable water future for atchison community

through strategic engineering and system integration, the city of atchison’s new radial collector wells will provide a more resilient and efficient raw water supply, reinforcing the city’s commitment to reliable water access for years to come. snyder & associates is proud to contribute to this critical infrastructure improvement, partnering with lre water to deliver innovative, long-term solutions that secure atchison’s water future through essential hydrogeologic expertise.

the polk county courthouse, a 1906 beaux arts classical landmark, has been thoughtfully restored to meet the evolving needs of the county while honoring its storied past. as a key contributor in this transformative multi-phase project, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , a subsidiary of snyder & associates, provided specialized expertise in building structural systems design as a sub-consultant to opn architects, the chief architect on this initiative.

a vision for renewal

the restoration project was conceived as part of a comprehensive plan to centralize and modernize court functions throughout polk county. with the goal of returning the courthouse to an aesthetic that closely mirrors its original elegance, while accommodating current operational requirements, the project involved extensive interior renovations. these upgrades included new masonry elevator shafts, modifications to existing ones, strategic floor removals and infills, and the implementation of innovative supports that harmonize with the historic walls.

tackling unique engineering challenges

renovating a structure originally built in 1906 presented several engineering challenges, particularly given the building’s robust construction methods and materials. the courthouse features multi-wythe masonry walls, sometimes several feet thick, and an original floor system designed by the columbian fireproofing company. this system, characterized by a combination of rolled steel bars suspended from steel beams with intricate stirrup connections, required a careful and innovative approach when introducing new openings and modifications.

2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 ’s engineering team conducted a thorough analysis of the historic floor systems, developing creative solutions to meet the project’s rigorous demands:

  • custom structural supports: to accommodate new elevator locations and modifications, engineers designed unique steel supports capable of bearing large wall loads while fitting within the tight spatial constraints of the historic structure.
  • large lintel solutions: for the exceptionally wide historic masonry walls, specially designed large lintels were introduced to ensure structural integrity without compromising the building’s historic character.
  • innovative access solutions: lightweight attic walkways were designed to provide necessary access for staff, demonstrating how modern engineering can coexist with century-old construction techniques.

the clear creek trail project has emerged as a significant addition to the ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity and recreational opportunities in johnson county. stretching over 1.88 miles, this 10-foot-wide portland cement concrete (pcc) trail meanders along the banks of clear creek, providing a vital link between the city of coralville and the city of tiffin. the two new pedestrian bridge crossings, a side creek crossing via a concrete box culvert, and passages beneath the newly designed interchange at interstates 80 and 380 are key to its functionality. as leaders in the trail design industry, the professionals with snyder & associates provided their expertise to create these new trail amenities.

navigating design challenges & achieving milestones

the clear creek trail project faced numerous design challenges, particularly as it runs through a vulnerable portion of the clear creek watershed, ultimately connecting to the iowa river in coralville. addressing environmental concerns, a wetland delineation report was prepared to avoid impacts on national wetlands. additionally, comprehensive hydrologic and hydraulic reviews were conducted to mitigate backwater effects caused by the trail’s infrastructure, ensuring no rise at existing interstate bridges.

coordination efforts with the iowa department of transportation (dot) and the iowa department of natural resources (dnr) were critical, facilitating the acquisition of right-of-way and floodplain permits essential to complete the project. a strategic design approach included the integration of ten pipe culverts within the trail corridor, preserving existing waterways’ functionality without compromising the proposed trail.

design integration with interchange reconfiguration

anticipating future needs, the trail’s alignment and profile were carefully planned to seamlessly integrate into the dot’s interchange project with an eye on additional trail connections when funds are available.

central to the project’s success are the two newly constructed continuous concrete slab pedestrian bridges over clear creek, measuring 120 feet and 130 feet, respectively. our subsidiary, 2022足球世界杯小组赛赛程 , developed detailed plans, including decorative railings and textured concrete, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of these trail bridges while ensuring structural integrity.

enhanced connectivity, elevated recreation

the completion of the clear creek trail project marks a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity and recreation within johnson county and connecting the communities on both sides of the newly redesigned interchange. as pedestrians and cyclists traverse its scenic route, the trail encourages active lifestyles and strengthens community bonds. with a commitment to sustainability and innovation, snyder & associates continues to spearhead projects that enrich the fabric of our communities, paving the way for a brighter, more connected future.
